Everyone is talking about it. It’s going to be huge. It’s a no-brainer.
The questions will be around who, when, and how much.
- Who (companies) will lead the way and benefit the most from the transition to 5G?
- When will all of this happen? Will it be fast or take many, many years to come to fruition? We have to consider infrastructure needs (hardware, software, networks, etc) and consumer hardware. Current phones and infrastructure can’t support a nation on 5G.
- How much will it costs to use? Will 5G be largely adopted by businesses and wealthy individuals who can afford the bandwidth? Is there a real possibility that 5G can become a discriminating, class based technology? Initially, I think yes. Over time, 5G will be widely adopted, but the timing will affect which companies will benefit and when.
As we push our way through 2019, a lot of 5G names will emerge. The trick will be identifying the leaders… and there will be lots, so don’t miss out. I’ll share what I know when I know it, but for now, here are three buzz-worthy names I’m watching:
XLNX -“Xilinx became the go-to supplier of chips for telecom carriers deploying 5G networks in China and South Korea. When 5G networks start up, carriers might need to make tweaks to their infrastructure to iron out flaws, and FPGAs are well-suited to this purpose because they can be programmed and reprogrammed as required. – reference.”

QRVO – “More specifically, Qorvo “enjoyed significant demand for our massive MIMO solutions from multiple OEMs,” management said in the conference call with analysts. Massive MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology is critical to the deployment of 5G technology as it allows the network to send and receive multiple signals over a single radio channel. – reference.”
